A working farm since 1828
Dairy
Dairying started on the property in 1890. Five dairies were later established, with a herd of about 500 cattle. Brownlow Hill was one of the first dairies in Australia to start a Holstein Friesian stud, which went on to win many ribbons at local and State shows.
The crippling milk prices in 2019 forced four of the dairies to close. The fifth Dairy is no longer operated by the Downes family.
Beef
A beef operation replaced the dairies and regenerative agriculture has now become a farm focus. We produce grass fed beef from organically fed pastures with low stocking rates.
Hay
Brownlow Hill runs a successful hay operation, supplying the local farmers, stable and horse owners with high quality lucerne and pasture hay.
Depending on weather conditions, hay is generally available year round.
